Criterion Collection Releases for May 2009

#470 is John Huston's film adaptation of Flannery O'Connor's first novel of the same name, Wise Blood (1979). A young Brad Dourif plays Hazel Motes.



#471, 472, 473, 474 constitute Pigs, Pimps, & Prostitutes: 3 Films by Shohei Imamura. The 3 films are Pigs and Battleships (1962), The Insect Woman (1963), and Intentions of Murder (1964).


Imamura also directed Criterion #207, The Pornographers (1966) and Criterion #384, Vengeance Is Mine (1979)


#475 is The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1974), directed by Peter Yates.

First Thing's First: Criterion Releases announced for this coming April...

#466 is Nagisa Oshima's In the Realm of the Senses (1976)



#467 is another film by Oshima, Empire of Passion (1978)



#468 (this one looks particularly interesting to me) is Science is Fiction: 23 Films by Jean Painlevé



#469 is Stephen Frears' The Hit, a little-known film with a tremendous cast: Terence Stamp, Tim Roth, and John Hurt

Criterion Collection Releases for March 2009

The Criterion Collection has announced its new releases for March 2009. Last month, they announced the planned release of their three February titles, Buñuel's The Exterminating Angel (Spine #459) and Simon of the Desert (Spine #460), and also David Lean's Hobson's Choice (Spine #461).

The four titles planned for March release:


Spine #462: The Last Metro (1980) (d. Truffaut)



Spine #463: Il Generale Della Rovere (1959) (d. Roberto Rossellini)



Spine #464: Danton (1983) (d. Andrzej Wajda)



Spine #465: Dodes'ka-den (1970) (d. Kurosawa)
